Life Healthcare (LHC) have the largest hospital network magazine in South Africa and their challenge is to ensure loyalty from both patients and staff. They wanted readers to have a favourable perception of the hospitals and proactively choose LHC doctors, and wanted their doctors and staff to stay informed about the LHC Group initiatives and areas of focus. Essentially, they needed to provide a printed example of what a well-lived life could look like if you make good health choices.

John Brown redesigned the existing print publication to give it a more contemporary health focus and clearly enforce the three key pillars: life, health and care. The first issue of the 64-page quarterly magazine, distributed by patients, doctors rooms and other Life Healthcare facilities across South Africa and Botswana, was produced by John Brown in September 2015.

Establishing a clear and coherent identity and overriding content strategy has seen the publication getting attention from outside sources, like tech companies wanting their products reviewed and various other clients within the healthcare sector expressing interest in both content and advertising.

Considering that Life Healthcare magazine’s audience is rarely the same reader every quarter since it primarily targets patients who are admitted for a limited period of time, it’s encouraging that many patients have been making contact with the content team to enquire how they can regularly receive the publication.

To give the publication a local flavour, the editorial team conceptualises and shoots its own images. Every feature – even travel – is given a health and wellbeing focus to show readers the far-reaching effects of good health on their lifestyle. The publication also gives readers more than just education. It provides inspiration, armchair travel, narratives, success stories and well-researched information presented in a non-threatening, non-judgmental way.

While Life Healthcare magazine is free to patients, it has been mistaken for a consumer publication because it is as considered and compelling and always a good read.

Life Healthcare professionals and specialists support every piece of editorial and imbue the publication with their passion for quality care and their commitment to ethics and excellence.

While Life Healthcare magazine is free to patients, it has been mistaken for a consumer publication because it is as considered and compelling and always a good read.

The publication feeds directly into Life Healthcare’s objective to play a role in the health landscape that positively impacts the healthcare environment in which they do business.

“Just a heads up to your whole team… I would never have thought content in a ‘hospital magazine’ would have been so relevant and good. Well done! I love it!”
