Role and mission:

John Brown South Africa is seeking to appoint a mid-weight Digital Designer. The position is based in Cape Town and will report directly to the Group Digital Art Director. 

The ideal candidate is more than a pixel-pusher. He or she has a passion for all digital media and producing outstanding editorialised content, proactively driving conceptual designs as well as roll-outs. If you understand that sweet spot where performance, engagement, beautiful design and brand objectives meet, we want to hear from you. 

Key responsibilities:
  • Set up style guides and visual CIs for digital properties 
  • Produce creative digital interfaces and design elements (email campaigns, social media, banners) 
  • Create wireframes, user/process flows and site maps from time to time 
  • Research and prepare material in support of new design concepts and create working drawings, storyboards and layouts to evaluate and present these ideas
  • Rework print designs into tailored creative for websites and social media 
  • Liaise with technical, commercial, editorial and project management teams to deliver on projects 
  • Contribute to any existing design styles and ensure that any design work for new multiplatform projects supports OR evolves these where appropriate 
  • Repurpose existing elements and templates as required by design changes 
  • Keep abreast of industry design developments and technology, and be able to interpret how these would impact services from a design perspective. 
  • Share information, ideas and best practice with team members  
What you’ll need:
  • Tertiary-level education in digital design or equivalent work experience 
  • Good understanding of digital design principles 
  • At least 3 years’ experience working in a design studio or creative agency 
  • Video-editing and motion-graphics knowledge (Adobe After Effects preferable) 
  • Understanding of UX best practices 
  • Good understanding of responsive web design and grid systems 
  • Ability to interpret brand guidelines and design principles for online media 
  • Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite – Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC and InDesign CC, HTML5 and CSS 
  • Experience in newsletter design, animated banners and infographics 

Advantageous is experience in the following: 

  • Multimedia and motion graphics 
  • Video editing with Adobe After Effects and Premier Pro  
  • Understanding of WordPress, PHP and Bootstrap 
  • JavaScript and XML 
  • Illustration
