John Brown Media is seeking to appoint a Managing Editor in Cape Town. The role reports to the Editor and Content Director. The Managing Editor is responsible for the overall effective functioning of the editorial team across print and digital, with a focus on the commercial and operational elements.

Key responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the production process of the magazine between the production, repro, editorial, art and advertising departments in order to meet delivery deadlines 
  • Set and co-coordinate internal magazine timelines, liaise with Editors and the Content Director regarding planning and production of each issue 
  • Manage, track and facilitate all jobs in the system 
  • Oversee and ensure that assets meet requirements by ensuring quality and editorial consistency 
  • Manage the workflow and approval processes and ensure that all client changes/requests are implemented 
  • Coordinate the digital production process between third-party and freelance suppliers (developers, designers, SEO partners, etc.) and in-house digital team in order to meet delivery deadlines 
  • Set and coordinate internal digital timelines 
  • Report status of all jobs and ensure that all critical deadlines are met 
  • Organise and participate in planning meetings 
  • Obtain assets from client and suppliers 
  • Manage editorial budgets 
  • Ensure administration related to people and operations is correctly and timeously completed 
  • Manage any ad hoc editorial projects as per assignment of Content Director 
  • Coordinate the production process with freelance teams 
  • Other administrative tasks, including monitoring budgets, processing invoices and minute taking 
  • Stay abreast of, evaluate and implement appropriate modern, world-class publishing production thinking and techniques to ensure efficient and effective operations 
What you’ll need:
  • Tertiary qualification in journalism/media studies 
  • At least 5 years’ experience in print journalism and digital media 
  • Previous experience managing a team 
  • Understanding of business and commercial principles 
  • Proficiency in relevant computer software packages 
  • Thorough understanding of print processes and operations 
  • Experience in digital traffic within an agency environment  
  • A good understanding of digital terminology and all major digital platforms 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong client service skills and experience
